CS 373 SWE Spring 2020: Alexy Correa

  1. What did you do this past week?

This past week, in class, we learned more about Python. I have no experience with the language, but I learned that Python has two different types of division, Learning something like that, this will motivate me to learn more about the other features that the language offers

We also started work on Project 1, Collatz, in class. The instructor showed us strategies to approach the problem. I also learned about some of the suggestions the other students had for caching, such as using an array to store previous values or keep calculating the same value over and over again. I’ll have a lot of testing to do to make this project efficient.

I started setting up my work environment. I tried to set up docker, and installed Python for Visual Studio.

2. What’s in your way?

I’ve been having trouble getting Docker. If this doesn’t work out, I’ll need to use SSH to connect to the lab computers, which isn’t so bad, but with the new security features that the school implemented, I have to use Duo Mobile every time I log in. I also haven’t a lot of time to work on the project due to CS 439.

3. What will you do next week?

Next week, I’ll try to finish project 1, learn how to use docker, and hopefully learn more about Python.

4. What was your experience of assertions, unit tests, and coverage? (this question will vary, week to week)

I have no experience with this and it is really bothering me. Going to class and talk about a topic that I don’t know is mind-recking. I have to learn this in order for future projects and for the current project.

5. How are you doing and holding up? What’s been most helpful for you in terms of support at this time?

It has been really difficult on me lately because I don’t have enough time for anything. CS 439 is taking a lot of time from me because I can’t get the programs to work at a normal pace and staying up late just to find what’s wrong, and that pressures me to sleep late, have 5-6 hours of sleep every night, and solving things at the due date. The thing that takes the cake is Chinese 607. It’s my second semester of Chinese. My first Chinese teacher gave us light work, but my current teacher gives too much homework due the next day. It usually takes me 5 hours to finish the homework, starting homework from other classes at 7PM. What has been most helpful for me is having calls from my family. It’s nice to hear a familiar voice. Calms me down a bit.

6. What made you happy this week?

Boba, talking to my girlfriend, and pre-ordering a collector’s set of Magic: The Gathering cards, which it better be worth it because I paid $210. Average price of $250.

7. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

Plan your strategy ahead. Having an idea of what you want to do will save you time, and when inspiration or ideas hit you on how to fix or rewrite your code, quickly note it down.
